Dept. of Rheumatology & Immunology, founded in 1999, is one of the earliest independent clinical departments aiming at the diagnosis and treatment of rheumatic diseases in southwest China. After 15 years of rapid development, it has become one of the largest rheumatology centers in Sichuan Province and combines clinical practice, teaching and research in a whole. The diagnosis and treatment technology of systemic lupus erythematosus, rheumatoid arthritis, Sjogren's syndrome and ankylosing spondylitis has reached advanced level. Our honors include “advanced unit”, “excellent department of comprehensive management”, “outstanding discipline of GCP management”, “advanced unit of 5S management” and “youth civilization” etc, and we have also become the “communist model demonstration window” and “outstanding basic party organization” of the Health Department of Sichuan Province.
The Dept. is characteristic of clinical practice and clinical research, adheres to the discipline of harmony, comprehension, union and enterprise, and advocates the spirit of dedication to the patients. We now have 75 beds and 2 wards. The number of outpatients exceeds 50,000 annually and inpatients more than 3,500. The clinical work is done efficiently and with high quality. As the department develops, it has now 42 talented professional medical staffs in total, including 13 specialized physicians. Among them, one is one of the academic and technical leaders of Sichuan Provincial Health Department, six have senior professional title and eight have intermediate professional title. There are two M.D.s and nine masters. The department is equipped with an independent rheumatic laboratory, a rheumatic therapeutic room and an examination room, focusing on the genetic screening, pathogenesis and clinical intervention of rheumatic disease. Current fundings include one National Natural Science Fund and several Scientific Research Projects funded by Sichuan Province. The department is a member of the Chinese Systemic Lupus Erythematosus network, member of the Chinese Rheumatism Data Center and Good Clinical Practice base approved by China Food and Drug Administration. Bone and joint diseases, such as rheumatoid arthritis, osteoarthritis, gouty arthritis and various spondyloarthropathy (ankylosing spondylitis, etc), diffuse connective tissue diseases such as systemic lupus erythematosus, Sjogren syndrome, polymyositis/dermatomyositis, scleroderma, Behcet's disease, a variety of systemic vasculitis, fibromyalgia syndrome and relapsing polychondritis are mainly diagnosed and treated in the department of rheumatology and immunology, with immune tests fully satisfying the clinical and scientific needs, such as detection of antinuclear antibodies, antineutrophil cytoplasmic antibodies, anticardiolipin antibodies, anti-beta2-GP1 antibody, anti-cyclic citrullinated peptide antibody, HLA-B27, autoimmune hepatitis associated antibodies, IgGsubtypes and analysis of synovial fluid and synovium, etc.
In addition to the traditional standardized treatment, the department also launches a series of advanced technologies in order to serve the patients better, such as biological target therapy of rheumatoid arthritis and spondyloarthropathy, interventional therapy under ultrasound guidance, immunoadsorption and plasmapheresis for refractory rheumatic disease, lymphopheresis and stem cell transplantation for critically ill patients, etc.
The department also conducts continued medical education, graduates teaching and residents training, with many excellent physicians serving in the national and provincial associations. Professional academic lectures are held regularly and management system of chronic rheumatic disease is built in order to follow up patients. The website as a new communication platform is used to provide clinic information, self-management knowledge of chronic disease and medical consultation for patients.
