Neurosurgery Department
The department of Neurosurgery was established by Li Fu-Tian in the 1960s. After half a century of unremitting efforts, it has developed into a reasonable echelon personnel with professional structure, first class equipment and a first-class neurosurgical center with the guidance of Jiang Wanshu, Zhang Lifu, and Huang Guangfu.
We have a good command of neuronavigation, microneurosurgery and endoscopic techniques. Neuro-radiation interventional therapy, stereotactic functional neurosurgery, radiosurgery and neurophysiological monitoring equipment and technology have been employed in our department. We have much experience in cerebrovascular disease, brain tumors, skull base tumors, spinal cord surgery, functional neurosurgery, radiosurgery, neurosurgical intensive care and intraoperative electrophysiological monitoring as well. The overall clinical strength is at the national advanced level. We began the postgraduate recruiting work in our department in 2000 in North Sichuan Medical College, 2003 in Zunyi Medical College, and 2014 in University of Electronic Science and Technology. In 2010, our department was honored as the first Sichuan provincial neurosurgery grade A key discipline. In summary, the dept. is an important neurosurgical base of medical, teaching and research in the South West China.
The Inpatient department is located in the third building, which is divided into neurosurgery ward 1, 2 and Neurosurgical ICU, including 158 beds. We also have a Gamma Knife Treatment Center, VEEG Room and Intraoperative Neurophysiological Monitoring Center to provide patients with a good medical environment and specialist technical aids.
We have 136 general medical staff with 32 doctors, including 8 with phD, 19 with Master Degree, 2 with Nursing Master Degree and 48 Bachelor Degree holders. Among them, there are 8 professors / chief neurosurgeons, 8 deputy chief neurosurgeons and 2 deputy director nurses. Cerebrovascular disease (2 groups), hemisphere disease (2 groups), anterior and mid fossa diseases, posterior fossa diseases, spinal and spinal cord diseases, functional disorders, radiosurgery, NICU (2 groups) and neurophysiology are 8 subspecialties and 10 subdivisions of the department. We diagnosed and treated more than 10,000 patients per year, among whom more than 3,000 people were hospitalized. We also performed more than 2,000 operations per year.
Sichuan Provincial People’s Hospital has lots of advanced apparatus such as 3.0T MRI, 4D 128-slice spiral CT, High-speed dual-source 64-slice spiral CT, PET-CT, SPECT, DSA, Linear accelerator etc. For the neurosurgery department we have Vector Vision Neuronavigator, Zeiss, Leica, Moller and Olympus surgical microscopes, CUSA, AESCULAP Endoscope, Radionics X knife, MASEP gamma knife, Cadwell 32 guide and Exon 32 guide intraoperative neurophysiological monitor, Brain Products EEG dipole three-dimensional epileptic focus localizing diagnostic systems, SOPHYSA PSO3000 intracranial pressure monitor, Brian Fuch cerebral edema monitor, Draeger Savina, Evita XL ventilator, the U.S. Space Company multifunction monitors, Mindray Medical bridge-type crane tower HyPort 8000, Braun infusion pumps, ABL90 Blood Gas Analyzer etc.
Long-term treatment effects and the quality of neurosurgery were improved with the help of neuronavigation, CUSA, microscopical operation with the aid of neuroendoscopy and intraoperative neurophysiological monitor, interventional radiotherapy, radiosurgery and stereotactic operation of modern neurosurgical treatment. In standardized treatment of subarachnoid hemorrhage and intracranial aneurysms, CTA in the early diagnosis of cerebrovascular disease and efficacy evaluation, surgery and interventional treatment of the complex intracranial aneurysm, comprehensive treatment of huge and deep cerebral vascular malformations, endoscopic treatment of hydrocephalus, spinal stability reconstruction of spinal diseases, transsphenoidal pituitary adenoma resection, comprehensive treatment of brain tumors in the deep brain or the eloquent area, surgery and radiosurgery treatment of the refractory epilepsy, the efficacy of treatment and other aspects of technology are in the domestic advanced level, and some projects up to the international advanced level. Good long-term efficacy makes the department a good reputation more than in the South West China. An excellent doctor may attract patients all over the country. There are some patients coming from Hong Kong, Macao, Taiwan, Korea, Singapore and so on. to seek treatment
Our department has undertaken more than 20 research projects with a total funding of more than 2 million RMB, published more than 200 papers which include 20 SCI papers and edited three books including Advanced Neurosurgery. Advanced Neurosurgery was published by Peoples Health Press. We invited more than 120 experts from 40 hospitals to edit this book. The book with 2,385,000 words and more than 500 pieces of drawings is an important reference books for the new young neurosurgeon and trainees. And we have also received 3 Sichuan Provincial Science and Technology Progress Award (i.e. a. Intracranial aneurysms basic and clinical research as the second prize. b. Methodological research of X-knife and fractionated radiotherapy on intracranial tumors, cerebral arterioveinous malformations as the third prize. c. Clinical application of surgical treatment of epilepsy the third prize.) and 1 Sichuan Medical Technology Award (the screening of differentially expressed genes with potential diagnostic and therapeutic value in glioma.).
We appreciate that we have national outstanding neurosurgery experts, such as Jiang Wanshu, Huang Guangfu in our dept.. They have served in various roles including the committee member of Chinese Neurosurgical Society, Standing Committee of the Chinese Congress of Neurological Surgeons, Neurosurgery Branch of Chinese Society for Neuroscience, Stereotactic and Functional Neurosurgery group director, vice chairman of the National Association of Epilepsy Surgery, the committee member of the International Chinese Federation Of Neurosurgical Sciences (ICFNS), former director of Sichuan Congress of Neurological Surgeons and designate director of Sichuan Neurosurgical Society and other staff.
Dr. Feng Hailong is the member of the spine neurosurgery expert committee of Chinese Congress of Neurological Surgeons, vice chairman of Sichuan Neurosurgical Society and Sichuan Congress of Neurological Surgeons, candidate for the leader of Sichuan Science and Technology and winner of Sichuan Province Youth Science and Technology Foundation. Professor Yongsheng He is the neurosurgical committee member of Chinese Committee of World Congress of Pain Physicians, propaganda member of the Working Committee of Chinese Congress of Neurological Surgeons, a panel member of Radio-neurosurgery Expert Committee of Chinese Congress of Neurological Surgeons and Academic and Technological Leader of Sichuan Provincial Health Department. Yong Chen is the member of Chinese Congress of Targeted Cancer Therapy. Our department also has Limin Yuan, Weidong Liu, Long Yi Chen, Yi Zeng, Xiaoling Liao, Zhili Li, Haibin Tan, Jian Tang, Bo Wu, Dongdong Zhao, and many other well-known neurosurgeons.
Jiang Wanshu, Huang Guangfu, Feng Hailong, He Yongsheng, Wu Bo and other experts are editors and peer reviewers of the magazines such as "Journal of Neurosurgery Spine", “Chinese Medical Journal”, [Asian Epilepsy Journal], [Chinese Journal of Neurosurgery], [Chinese Journal of Neuromedicine], [Journal of Neurosurgical Diseases], [Chinese Journal of Clinical Neurosurgery], [Stereotactic and Functional Neurosurgery] Chinese.
We attach great importance to the subject echelon construction and training of young surgeons. For a long time, we have insisted on conducting academic activities, executed three-tier system of ward rounds, and have sent a lot of young surgeons abroad (as University of Marburg in Germany, Frankfurt University, School of Medicine, Hiroshima University, Tainan Chi Mei Hospital, University of Vienna, Austria, UCLA, Cedars Sinai, Stanford University in the United States), and domestic well-known hospital (as Tiantan, Xuanwu, Xijing Hospital, et al.) to study new techniques as well.
We actively declared and organized several national and provincial re-education projects. We have been serving and in charge of the provincial emergency consultation and emergency incident handling efficiently in recent decades. And the senior doctors have given many lectures in the national, provincial and Chengdu Neurosurgery Congress or re-educational projects. These have contributed a lot to the development of the West China neurosurgery.
